About
This training is eligible for 0.5 BACB General Learning CEUs. Many Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) work in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), making a clear and clinically meaningful understanding of autism essential to practice. This presentation provides an overview of ASD, framing it as a diagnosis, a pattern of behaviour, a learning profile, and a lived experience . It highlights how definitions shape assessment, goal selection, and intervention, and addresses the risks of narrow, deficit-focused perspectives. The presentation reviews the historical shift toward a spectrum-based understanding and outlines the multifactorial nature of ASD, including genetic, environmental, and developmental influences. Diagnostic considerations based on DSM-5 are discussed, with emphasis on patterns of behaviour and context. The session concludes with clinical implications, encouraging individualized, function-based approaches and thoughtful, ethical communication with families.
