I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in the field of ABA, with my focus largely on supporting individuals with Autism. Lately, I’ve found myself immersed in higher-level education, teaching the next generation of professionals in this field. While this work is undoubtedly fulfilling, there’s a unique joy I experience when I return to my clinic. Watching the progress of my little learners — seeing their growth, their victories, both big and small — that feeling is simply irreplaceable.
Attitudes: Your Attitude is Everything
For me, this work has always been about empathy, care, acceptance, and compassion. These values are at the core of who I am and how I approach my work. I’ve always strived to ensure that each individual I support receives the care they need in every aspect of their life — not just within the walls of an ABA center, but in their homes, schools, and communities. It’s not just about teaching a skill; it’s about ensuring that skill translates into their everyday lives and making sure that this skill means something to them too. Listening to the voices of parents, teachers, and others who are part of this individual’s life is essential because we are all here for the same reason — we care deeply.
The way you feel about the families you serve, and how you respond to the challenges they face, has the power to change everything. When your attitude is driven by compassion, patience, and a genuine desire to help, it transforms how we approach our work. It’s not just about implementing a program or following a plan — it’s about understanding the unique struggles each family is going through and meeting them where they are. When you care deeply, it shows in every interaction, every decision, and every solution you create.
Your attitude changes the game! Your attitude can uplift a family that’s feeling overwhelmed or provide hope to parents who may be struggling. It shifts the focus from simply addressing behaviors to truly supporting the whole individual, helping them thrive in every part of their life. Our work becomes more impactful when we approach it with this mindset. By fostering an attitude of empathy and dedication, we don’t just change behaviors — we change lives.
Never Forget Your Intention
I remember working at a daycare and meeting a young learner with ASD who struggled to communicate her needs. At that moment, I knew. I knew this was where my heart was. I wanted to make a difference in her life, to help her live a life filled with meaning, and to know that in some way, I was a part of that. That was my intention when I began this journey, and it remains my intention today. Even as I’ve become more involved in teaching and education, my purpose hasn’t changed — it’s only expanded. Now, I’m striving to support more people, to guide those who will, in turn, support others. While I can only reach so many individuals with Autism and their families, by helping others carry that same intention, I’m extending my reach.
This is also why I named my agency Glowing Growth. In the world of Autism, growth glows; and when you help an individual to grow, you glow too! It’s radiant. Each step, each milestone, is a testament to the hard work and resilience of these individuals and the team behind them. Their growth truly glows, and I’m just so grateful to be a part of their journey.
